The Winter Palace of St Petersburg was commissioned in 1762 by Empress Elizabeth. The Baroque Baroque Palace was designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli, an architect. The Winter Palace houses the oldest museum in the world, the Museum of the Hermitage. The Hermitsage Museum has a collection of 3 million objects on display, most especially European art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
