The foremost open-air museum in Eastern Europe was opened in 1936. It contains over 60 historic rural buildings from all over Romania and from various periods. Highlights include a 35-meter belfry of a Maramure wooden cathedral, embellished on the inside with fading icons. The museum also has a souvenir shop, a selection of dining choices in a 19th-century hotel, from stalls selling sweets to a pub.
