Designed from 1886 to 1887, the Rathaus, or Rathaus in German, has 647 rooms. It was designed to replace the building of the old town hall that burned down in 1842. The building houses the senate and the parliament of the city. Directed tours of the State Rooms are available regularly and last 40 minutes in both English and German. In front of the house is the town's main market square, Rathausmarkt.
