On 18 May 1848, St Paul's Church was the site of the first democratically elected German parliament and the place of the inauguration of the German National Assembly. The large-scale circular mural completed in 1991 by Berlin artist Johannes Grtzke, which chronicles the past of unified and democratic Germany, is most noteworthy.
