Description

The heart of Vienna is St Stephen's Cathedral, or Stephansdom. Since the 12th century, a church has stood on this site, but nothing remains of the original building. At the behest of Habsburg Duke Rudolf IV, the Gothic makeover started in 1359. The dominant characteristic of the church is the skeletal Studturm (south tower) Standing 450 ft (136.7m) high, after 75 years of hard labor, it was completed in 1433.
