Description

The Golden-Domed Monastery of St Michael was commissioned to house the relics of St Barbara by Prince Sviatopolk in 1108. In Ukraine, it was Byzantine in nature and survived decades of political instability, expanding and acquiring a magnificent Baroque façade until being demolished in 1936 by the USSR under Stalin. It was spectacularly brought back to life with a meticulous restoration in 2000, almost a decade after independence from Russia. A community of monks has returned to the monastery and it is once again flourishing today. The interior of the church shines with Baroque icons, its walls smothered again with original frescoes and mosaics.
