Description

The Church of St Andrew is a Baroque church on Andriivskyi uzviz street in Kiev. It was completed by the Russian Empress Elizabeth, daughter of Peter the Great, on a commission in 1754. The church is one of the few public buildings in the two world wars and Soviet occupation to have survived destruction. It is a multi-colored confection packed with gold and gleaming white and turquoise walls, composed of five green spires. It has a startlingly scarlet iconostasis covered in paintings of Biblical scenes (Orthodox altar screen).
