Island, Nature
The setting for the 2005 novel 'The Island' by Victoria Hislop was Spinalonga Island. The Venetian fortress was built in 1579 and was used as a Turkish bastion and leprosy colony throughout the years. The huge fort is enclosed by a circular walk to watch over the nearby mainland port of Elounda.
