Skansen was founded as a branch of the Nordic Museum by Artur Hazelius in the late 19th century. Its goal is to explain the various ways of living in Sweden prior to industrialization. It now features numerous houses and studios where traditional craftsmanship can be witnessed. A zoo with a wide variety of Nordic species, including bison, brown bear, moose, gray seal and otter, is also open.
