
Cultural-Historical, Temple-Tomb
Sanjusangendo Temple, founded in 1164, is remarkable in scale, size, and detail. 1001 statues of the goddess of compassion, Kannon, flanked by the featured image of the sitting giant Kannon. The wooden temple building is 118 meters (387 feet) tall, making it the world's largest of its kind. Originally constructed for the former Go-Shirakawa emperor, the Temple is still a popular tourist stop today.
