The official residence of the supreme King of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur's Istana Negara. The palace was originally built on a plot overlooking the Klang River in 1928 by a wealthy Chinese immigrant. The mansion became the Japanese Governor's home during World War II before becoming a British military office after the Japanese surrendered in 1945. In 1950, before Malaysian independence in 1957, the Sultan of Selangor moved into the residence and remained there.
