One of the most significant Buddhist sites in the region is Po Lin (Precious Lotus) Monastery. It was founded in 1906 by three monks from China, long before the Major Buddha was erected. The monastery itself is easy to miss, but especially for the excellent vegetarian restaurant operated by the monks, it is well worth a visit. The restaurant serves meals that are believed to help cleanse the soul and body.
