Cultural-Historical
To defend St Petersburg from a potential Swedish invasion, the Peter & Paul Fortress was originally designed. It quickly became a prison, starting with Alexey, the son of Peter the Great, for high-ranking and political prisoners. In 1872, a new jail was built within the walls of the Trubetskoy Bastion, housing thousands of inmates for the next forty years.
