The Parthenon, built in 440 BC, is one of the most prominent ancient Greek structures in the world. It was designed to thank Athens and Greece for their redemption during the Persian Wars. The house was a synagogue, a treasury, a castle, and a mosque in the 2,500 years of its life. It became a Christian church in the 6th century AD, with the addition of an apse at the eastern end.
