Prince-President Louis-Napoleon designed the Palais du Pharo in 1852. The Pharo headland, overlooking Vieux Port and Ile d'If, was given to him, but he never lived there. It was given back by Empress Eugenie to the city of Marseille, who converted it into a medical school. Since then, it has been amended to become a new conference center. Below the forecourt, many of the auditoriums are hidden underground.
