Description

The main office building in D.C. was the Former Post Office. When, in 1899, it opened. It was quickly demolished in favour of a new Union Station postal depot building. By the late 1920s, in Washington, public opinion was that the structure should be torn down, but the renovation was halted by the Great Depression. It was rescued by community funding and the National Endowment for the Arts in the 1970s.
