Description

One of the first houses constructed in 1799 in Washington, D.C., was the Octagon Building. During the War of 1812, it was used as a French ambassador and as a temporary presidential residence for President James Madison. It was acquired in 1899 for use as its headquarters by the American Institution of Architects.
