Cultural-Historical
From O'Connell Street to D'Olier Road, the O'Connell Bridge crosses the River Liffey. It was initially known as Carlisle Bridge, after Ireland's Lord Lieutenant. It was recognized as the most unsafe bridge in the empire in 1852. In Europe, it is the only traffic bridge that is larger than a long one. The bridge was rebuilt to be 50 meters wide and 45 meters long in 1880.
