Mount Nebo, more than 1 km above the nearby Dead Sea, is 817 meters (2,680 feet) above sea level. Some time after God showed him the Holy Land, Moses is said to have died on or above the mountain. The ruins of mosaics from a Byzantine monastery can be seen on one of the twin peaks of the mountains.
