In colonial times, Merdaka Square was a cricket field and was neglected by the Royal Selangor Club. It was here that the Union Jack flag was lowered and the first raising of the Malay flag occurred. The square is now the subject of many of the festivities in the area, and on August 31, the Independence Day festival takes place here.
