In 600 BC, the Greeks landed in Marseille and set up a small town for trade. The town expanded and became a base for growing cannabis, or hemp, for nautical rope in the Middle Ages. In WWII, during the Battle of Marseille, the Nazis obliterated the port and the historic region. A rebuilding effort was initiated after 1948 and the port is again a busy city center these days.
