Description

The Maidens Fortress, or Kiz Kulesi, is an ancient Istanbul site situated in the Bosphorus Strait on a tiny islet. The origins of the tower are well understood, leading to stories such as one attesting that it was designed to lock away a princess after it was prophesied that on her 18th birthday she would die of a snake bite. Originally made of stone, after the Ottoman Turks occupied the town, a wooden tower was added in the 12th century.
