The national cathedral of Bogotá has been restored many times, most recently in 1823. Originally a small thatch-roofed hut, it was eventually reconstructed into a stronger adobe structure on a muddy market plaza. With its stately rows of gilded Egyptian columns, the luxurious whitewashed interior is not the most ornate of the cities by a long shot.
