In eastern Bali, the seaside village of Kusamba is home to local sea salt harvesting and fishing. When Prahu fishing boats cruise the nearshore waterways, the beach comes alive at night and in the predawn hours.In the hot sun, the saltwater is scattered over areas of the black sand beach and is allowed to crystallize. The largest of a chain of three islands about seven miles offshore, Nusa Penida is home to about 40,000 people and many endangered species of birds.
