Cultural-Historical
The Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin was established in 1787 and played a significant role in Ireland's creation as an independent republic. During the diplomatic trouble between Ireland and the UK, many prominent Irish independent fighters were imprisoned in this jailhouse. There, too, was the future Irish Prime Minister, Eamon de Valera, for his role in the 1916 Easter Rising.
