Description

The Pechersk Lavra of Kiev is a golden-domed Orthodox Christian monastery mentioned by UNESCO. It originated in 1051, when an underground shrine was built in a cave by an Orthodox monk. The monastery has played a central role in Ukrainian life since the 11th century. The original building was devastated by a fire in 1718, and the monastery, its cathedral, church and refectory were all restored in the Baroque style.
