The Roman city of Gerasa became rich both in iron ore and in agricultural produce. Everything still visible are the Forum, Hippodrome, Amphitheater, Agora, and the proud columns of the Temple to Artemis. Gerasa was destroyed by an earthquake not long after the spread of Islam in the region, and was buried in the sand for centuries.
