In 1799, the five-story red sandstone palace was designed by Sawai Pratap Singh using Rajput and Mughal stylistic elements. Dozens of artists and builders have carved, decorated and gilded the rooftop gardens. The lower four floors of the palace are flooded during the monsoon season. If the sinking sun lights up the water and marble alike, come at dusk.
