The Square of Freedom is the cultural and political center of Ukraine's life. It is lined with an impressive collection of grandiose villas, most of which date back to the 19th century. In the center of the square, the 61-m (200-ft) white-marble Independence Statue looms.Crafted by Ukrainian architect Anatoliy Kushch, it was placed in the piazza in 1991 on the 10th anniversary of independence. As the focus of Ukraine's Orange Revolution, the square was the site of civil unrest in 2004.
