Description

During the reign of King Carlos III, the Plaza de la Independencia was opened in 1778. In 1869, the architect Francesco Sabatini designed it. The Puerta de Alcala, built in the 18th century, is a major neo-Classical landmark. In 2001, in celebration of Madrid being designated the World Book Center, several gardens were added to the square and lights were added.
