Description

Sydney's foundations were founded on prison labor, and the Hyde Park Barracks are home to prisoners who were sentenced to live in Australia for the remainder of their days. It was first opened to hold male inmates employed on government ventures and later to house orphan girls fleeing the Irish famine, and was also used as a female immigration depot, an asylum for migrant women, and a courthouse.
