Description

In the heart of Sydney's city center, Hyde Park is Australia's oldest park and a welcoming green space. Hyde Park includes many significant monuments and sculptures, themed gardens, water features, the Archibald Fountain and the ANZAC Memorial Building and Visitor Center, separated into northern and southern parts by Park Lane.
While Governor Macquarie gazetted it as a public park in 1810 and named after Hyde Park in London, until 1927, when architect and landscape artist Norman Weekes won a competition to embellish the area, today's park was not recognizable in its current form. The park was used as a sports ground, a racecourse and a spot for bareknuckle fights prior to this.
