Cultural-Historical, Monument
In honor of the Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph I, Budapest's main opera house was built in 1884. Designed by Miks Ybl, the neo-Renaissance opera house has an ornate Baroque interior. From 1887-1891, Gustave Mahler was the owner of the opera house and his status as one of the leading cultural houses in the world was cemented. Under the Communist dictatorship in the 1970s, it collapsed into disrepair.
