Description

For over 1,000 years, the sports and cultural centre of the old Byzantine capital was the Hippodrome of Constantinople. The Hippodrome potentially housed more than 100,000 persons, with a U-shaped race track and two floors of spectator galleries. The former site is now occupied by Sultan Ahmet Square and largely follows its ground plan and dimensions. The Obelisk of Theodosius, originally erected at the Amun Re temple at Karnak in Egypt, is the oldest monument in all of Istanbul.
