Description

The first church founded in Constantinople was Hagia Irene, though the present building dates back to the 6th century. It was used as an Orthodox church and was the only church in Istanbul that was not converted into a mosque until the city was invaded by the Ottoman Turks.Within, since the church itself is the prime attraction, you can not find a conventional museum. Take note of the still-intact apse and the black cross and its five sets of built-in seats.
