Description

The oldest landmark in Toronto and one of the first lighthouses built on the Great Lakes is the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, built in 1808. Sperm whale oil and later coal were initially used for lighting the lantern and directing ships around York Harbour. It was finally replaced by a completely modern, electric tower and the iconic grey stone structure is still open to the public only periodically.
