Fort Santiago was built as a defensive castle by the Spanish conquistador, Miguel Lpez de Legazpi. Before his execution in 1896, Jos Rizal, considered a national hero in the Philippines, was incarcerated at Fort Santiago. The fortress was occupied by the Spanish, the Free Filipinos, the US and the Japanese Imperial Army (the Stars and Stripes were erected there in 1898).
