In reaction to a local rebellion in Marseilles, Fort Saint-Jean was founded by Louis XIV in 1660. The name comes from the site where the fort, formerly held by the Order of the Knights of Saint John, was built. The fort was later used on many occasions for military reasons, and for most of the 19th and 20th century, it was in the hands of the French army.
