Description

Originally, the Egyptian Obelisk was built in the 15th century B.C. At Karnak temple, near present-day Luxor. To mark his twentieth year in office, the Roman Emperor Constantius II brought the obelisk up the Nile River to Alexandria in 357. In 390, the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius relocated it to Istanbul and erected what was then known as the Constantinople Hippodrome.
