Between 1929 and 1933, Connaught Place, named after the Duke of Connaught, was built. It has a series of colonnaded buildings dedicated to stores, banks, restaurants, hotels and offices that are architecturally standardized. In 1995, after the late Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Ghandi, and his wife, the inner and outer circles were called Rajiv Chowk and Indira Chowk.
