Château d'If is located 2 miles (3.5km) west of the Vieux Port on a 12 sq mile (30 sq km) island. There were political prisoners, along with hundreds of Protestants, imprisoned here. Mirabeau, the revolutionary hero, and the 1871 Communards were all incarcerated there. The jail was closed in 1890 and the island was open to the public.
