Established in the 15th century by the Knights Hospitaller of Rhodes, the castle was designed by Heinrich Schlegelholt, a German architect. It was partly built from the stones of the Halicarnassus Mausoleum, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It remains a remarkably preserved example of medieval architecture, despite losing its since-reconstructed minaret in the World war ii bombings.
