The first fort on this site was mentioned in the year 907, when Bratislava was already a major trading post on the Danube River. The Renaissance palace was built on the ruins of earlier medieval and Gothic castles in the mid-16th century. It was one of the Habsburg dynasty's many palatial homes that dominated over most of Europe for decades and held their crown jewels. The castle was demolished in 1811 by fire and was to remain in ruins until restoration in the 1950s was finished.
