For the wife of Cosimo I de Medici, the Boboli Gardens were initially started in the 1540s, and were added again in the 16th century and again in the 17th century.Tree-lined paths, sculpture-filled grottos, and an amphitheater with an Egyptian obelisk at its core are noteworthy features. Some of the gardens are some of the oldest examples of 16th century Italian formal gardens, and they are now open to the public.
