Description

The cistern, founded in the mid-500s by Emperor Justinian, dates back to Byzantine days when the town was called Constantinople.A vaulted brick ceiling backed by a forest of Corinthian-carved marble columns is in the cavernous underground water-storage room. Look for the two pillars on your way across the Basilica Cistern, which have the mask of Medusa painted on their base.
