Cultural-Historical
In the region now known as Coptic (or Old) Cairo, the ancient Babylon Fortress was originally built by the Romans. The fortress was established in a strong and strategic location by a canal that connected the Nile to the Red Sea through this region. In the fortress grounds, the Coptic Egyptians founded a monastery as well as many churches.
