The most prominent Minoan site outside of Crete is Ancient Akrotiri. It was devastated in around 1650 BC by a mighty volcanic eruption. The sandstone remains of Akrotiris buildings reach several stories. For some years, the excavation site has been abandoned, though reconstruction is ongoing.
