Cultural-Historical, Religious
The Cairo skyline is dominated by the Alabaster Mosque, or Mohammed Ali's Mosque. It took 18 years to build and was commissioned from 1805 - 1849 by Mohammad Ali, ruler of Egypt. Note the chintzy clock, a gift from King Louis-Philippe of France, in the central courtyard. On arrival, it was destroyed and has yet to be restored. Never has the mosque found much favor with authors who blamed it for it.
