As a house for the Norwegian royal family, Akershus Castle was built in 1299. It was used as a stronghold in 1592 to defend Oslo from sieges. It is also the home of the Norwegian Defense Ministry. With its chapel, reception and banquet rooms and the Royal Mausoleum, the castle represents a high point of Norwegian grandiosity. For historical buffs and Oslo tourists, it's a must.
