The Accademia Gallery is home to one of the most prominent artworks in the world - the David statue of Michelangelo. Carved by a 26-year-old genius from a single block of marble, it is one of the most famous artworks in Italy. Originally, the statue stood in Piazza della Signoria, but was relocated in 1873 to this more protected area. In the piazza, a clone still remains.
